Over the years I have used or reviewed a number of different Spanish language learning courses. Some I found were quite good, others were very poor indeed.

While I do believe that learning Spanish while living in a Spanish speaking country is still the best way to become fluent, that is not practical for most people.

Nevertheless, I have found that there are several Spanish language learning programs that can get you to a decent level of proficiency if you are actually serious and follow the programs as designed. These programs can even be used to prepare yourself prior to going to a Spanish speaking country to learn Spanish if that is the learning approach you choose.

While there are some programs that stand out above others, there is no program that is perfect for all situations and needs.

Of all the self study Spanish language learning programs on the market today, Rocket Spanish receives our highest recommendation for getting off the ground quickly and laying a good basic foundation.

Rocket Spanish consists of 12 hours of interactive lessons (downloadable or on CD), beginner and advanced grammar books, a conversation book, and software language-learning games.

While Rocket Spanish lives up closer to its advertising claims than any of the other language-learning programs we've reviewed, it will not make most people fluent in 90 days. However, we believe that it will take you further quicker than almost any other Spanish language-learning product currently on the market.

Many of the current Spanish language-learning products on the market are audio only and while they may be very good in teaching many people how to listen, understand, and speak the targeted language at some level of fluency, many other people need to be able to see the words in print to fully grasp the language.

Learning to read a language is important in its' own right. Surely if you wish to learn to speak a language to travel, you will also want to be able to read signs, menus, and other written items during your travels. Very few people need to learn only how to speak a modern language.

And while several of the audio only programs claim that they teach you to learn the language naturally, just as you learned it as a child, you have to remember it takes children a number of years to learn to commuicate fluently in their native language. Older students of a new language can speed up the process greatly by understanding the rules of the language (the grammar) and learning to read and visualize the language at the same time.

This is where Rocket Spanish shines. The Rocket Spanish language-learning program provides a mix of audio, reading, and grammar material that allows you to gain a knowledge of the Spanish language quickly and at the same time gives you the confidence to be able to speak Spanish comfortably.

Rocket Spanish actuually makes learning to speak Spanish fun. While many other Spanish language-learning programs provide lists of words to memorize (audio list or flash cards), which are dull and boring and do not put the words into meaningful context, Rocket Spanish does not fall into this trap.

With Rocket Spanish you will learn your vocabulary in a meaningful context, in dialogs and language-learning games and grammar is not taught so much as a set of rules, but rather as explanations as to why things are done the way they are in Spanish.
